This week’s selection is the hazmat collection by SutoSuto.
While we strolled around Formnext the other week, we came upon a rather intriguing display of 3D printed sculptures.
The works were produced by Sutosuto, a Hamburg-based design duo that produces 2D and 3D artwork. They partnered with companies like Photocentric (for large resin 3D prints) and Builder (for large FFF 3D prints) to produce a series of amazing sculptures.
The works each had the bizarre theme of a worker in a yellow hazmat suit in various situations. At top you can see a suited individual seemingly stuck in the ground. Is this a “head in the sand” statement?
We observed several works, all of which involved the hazmat suit, and sometimes a pink brain. There was even a robotic brain shuffling around the floor of the display, and I had to watch where I walked carefully to avoid stepping on it.
What struck me about the works was that these 3D works were very reminiscent of detailed abstract 2D works. Somehow, the Sutosuto designers were able to take that 2D feeling and replicate it in 3D form using 3D printing.
I’m hoping more artists take the step from 2D into the 3D world with the increased access to the technology and the emergence of many large-format 3D printers.
