This week’s selection is “Soonish: Ten Emerging Technologies That’ll Improve and/or Ruin Everything” by Kelly Weinersmith and Zach Weinersmith.
What will the future look like? What amazing things will happen? What terrible mistakes will we make? This is the focus of this interesting and amusing book that investigates ten up and coming technologies that are likely to transform our world, for good or evil.
Technologies covered in this book include not only 3D printing, but also space elevators, brain to computer interfaces, robotic swarms, programmable matter, and much more.
To readers of Fabbaloo, this may seem out of date, as we are awash in 3D printers these days. But that’s really just an illusion. The truth is that our group of specialists and enthusiasts now has access to plenty of equipment, materials and 3D printing software. However, most of the world does not.
In the case of industry, only a tiny fraction of manufacturing is performed with 3D printing technology. Even now it is only just beginning to make its way into established businesses.
The future ahead could be very different indeed. Today we are accustomed to using standard mass produced identical parts, but my belief is that once 3D print technology reaches a certain level, we will quickly see a shift towards customized products at every level. We will become accustomed to products that fit perfectly for whatever it is we need, be it for mechanical use, fashion or entertainment.
That’s a very different world than today, and it might not be that many years away.
The surprising thing is that there are other technologies in a similar position. New tech will almost certainly change society as we know it in ways unimaginable, just as 3D printing will.
What will these changes be, exactly? That’s why you need to get this book.
