Autodesk’s Fusion 360 CAD tool is as popular as it is full of functionality. Not only can you expertly model mechanical parts, but you can also perform CAM functions to directly prepare models for production on a variety of equipment, including 3D printing.
While most people use Fusion 360 for mechanical part design, there are many nuances to designing advanced parts. One aspect is surface design, which is done through a combination of drawings, splines, lofts, extrudes and other creation features.
Splines are mathematically driven smooth curves that can be easily controlled through parameters and control points. They are often used to create curves that eventually are incorporated into the solid portion of a design.
Being able to design complex surfaces is not something a beginner to Autodesk Fusion 360 would be able to do. Most beginners use the basic functions to produce precision mechanical parts.
That’s where this book comes in. Rather than focusing on the basics, this book instead looks deeply at the various ways to design complex surfaces using splines. Spline curves can be used to guide the creation of complex surfaces, which then become part of a solid model.
