Dyemansion has eliminated “forever chemicals” from their post-processing solution.

The company provides a variety of 3D print post-processing solutions, including dyeing parts with consistent and vibrant colors. One of their most recent products is a vapor smoothing technology.

Vapor smoothing is used to eliminate the unsightly layer lines found on most 3D prints. This is done by vaporizing a solvent, which then lands on all exterior surfaces of the print. The solvent is given enough time to subtly soften the surface, which begins to flow. This removes the layer lines and produces a perfectly smooth surface. It’s all in the timing and temperatures, handled by the Dyemansion equipment and process.

But there’s a problem. Many of the solvents used in the vapor smoothing process by companies have included HFIP, which is in the PFAS category.

What is that? It’s polyfluoroalkyl substances, a group of man-made chemicals used for their water- and stain-resistant properties in products like non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, and firefighting foams. Known as “forever chemicals,” they are extremely persistent in the environment and the human body due to their strong carbon-fluorine bonds. This durability means they do not break down naturally, leading to widespread contamination and potential health risks, including immune, hormonal, and developmental effects.

That’s not good, and companies are increasingly seeking solutions.

One solution (literally) is Dyemansion’s VaporFuse system, which does not use a PFAS solvent. It’s instead a “green” product that is far safer to use.

In fact, Dyemansion two years ago managed to score a food-safe certification for their process.

As time passes, more companies are learning about the dangers of PFAS chemicals and seeking ways to eliminate them from their workplaces. DyeMansion reports that three notable 3D print services have taken up DyeMansion equipment, especially for this reason. They include Forecast 3D, RapidCenter, FKM, and Hasenauer & Hesser. It seems that DyeMansion now has quite a long list of clients.

DyeMansion explains the advantages:

“Green technologies often outperform legacy processes not only by reducing environmental impact but by improving efficiency, quality, and long-term cost-effectiveness. The use of green solvents when vapor smoothing 3D printed plastic parts offers significant advantages over legacy PFAS-based solvents, which are increasingly subject to phase-out plans and stricter regulations. Some equipment, such as DyeMansion’s Powerfuse S, even allows the solvent to be recycled directly in a closed-loop system, further reducing costs and environmental footprint.”

The shift towards greener solutions is inevitable and gaining momentum. Companies would be wise to follow DyeMansion’s strategy here: make the product green, ready for use when the surge comes.
