3D printed remaining filament estimator tool [Source: MakerWorld]

This week’s selection is the Filament Estimator by MakerWorld contributor Northeast Tiger Walking Again.

“Tiger” has designed a number of 3D models related to print operations, including a spool safety lock and a Bowden fixture. Here is another useful item, a filament estimator.

The idea is to hold the gauge against the inner surface of the spool touching the current level of filament. The estimator is then read against the top edge of the spool.

The numbers on the gauge represent the estimated weight of remaining filament. For example, a reading of “4” tells you there is approximately 400g of material left on the spool. The levels are not linear and are computed to match the increasing diameter of the filament winding.

There’s one catch: this device is designed to work with Bambu Lab spools. Other spools may have slightly different dimensions, leading to inaccurate results.

It would be entirely possible to design similar estimators for other spool formats, but that’s up to others to do.

The “usefulness to print difficulty” ratio on this design is very high: it’s incredibly easy to print, as it’s just a flat piece. But you might end up using it every day.
