The adorable 3D printed knitted elephant [Source: MakerWorld]

This week’s selection is the Cute Knitted Elephant by MakerWorld contributor AK.

“AK” lists a number of unusual artistic designs on MakerWorld, many of which are very cute. However, the most adorable is certainly the Cute Knitted Elephant.

While the elephant design is itself cute, the surface texture makes it even more attractive. Somehow AK used a CAD technique to produce the highly detailed surface, which closely resembles knitting.

This complex surface, however, makes it somewhat more challenging to handle in 3D software tools. On a fast machine, the slicing operation can take a few minutes due to the number of curves and overhangs.

It can also take a considerable amount of time to print. My print job was nine hours on a Bambu Lab A1 Mini with 0.2mm nozzle. As this is a highly textured 3D model, I’d advise using a narrower model to achieve more detail.

The 3D model comes in two plates. One is the elephant itself, and the second plate is for the two eyes. The idea is to print the eyes with a different color, and then glue them onto the body. This eliminates the need for using the AMS and its wasteful poop. It’s far faster and easier to just print two plates.

Do you need a cute knitted elephant? If you don’t, someone you know does.
