This week’s selection is the 3D printed Box Opener by Printables contributor ART TOO.
What can I say? This is, in fact, a box opener. It opens boxes.
If you’re anything like me, you open a lot of boxes, particularly at this time of the year. Boxes are easy to open if you have something sharp nearby, and for me that means a quick look around to find a sharp tool. Ideally it’s a box cutter, but those might not be as handy as those scissors on the table.
However, scissors are not the greatest for opening boxes. In some haste opening a box with scissors earlier this year I somehow managed to slice open a nasty cut. Scissors are not really ideal for opening boxes.
But this item is specifically designed to open boxes, and it has far less chance of chopping open your fingers.
Even better, it’s ridiculously easy to 3D print: one part, flat bottom, no overhangs. Absolutely anyone with any kind of 3D printer can print one of these. Or many: leave them around your workspace so one is always within reach if boxes suddenly arrive!
For me, the best 3D models are those that are functional (this is very functional), easy to print (oh yes) and attractive (I’d say the Box Opener is stylish). This item hits all three, and that’s why it’s Design of the Week.
