This week’s selection is the Bit Coin Bank by MakerWorld contributor ururk.

This is one of many fanciful coin bank designs you can find online, but this one is very different. It’s a Bit Coin bank.

No, not a Bitcoin bank — that’s impossible because Bitcoins are virtual entities that exist only in digital form on blockchains.

Instead, this is a Bit … Coin … bank. A bank for coins made of oversize drill bits! A pretty interesting play on words.

The appearance of the bank is certainly unique and attractive in its own way. However, anyone that knows about Bitcoin will start to laugh once they get the joke. Those who don’t at least chuckle probably don’t understand Bitcoin. In a way, this item could serve as an informal “do you know about Bitcoin” test.

I like this design because it’s one of many that are what might be a new kind of communication medium: a physical joke, transmitted digitally and then reproduced locally with 3D printing. This form of interaction has not been possible until the introduction of CAD and 3D printing.

Another example of this approach was a Design of the Week from eight years ago, the “Missile Toe”, shown here.

I’m looking forward to seeing more 3D printed jokes.
