Creality has launched a new brand: Soleyin.

What is it? It’s the brand for a new line of 3D printer filaments produced by Creality. It seems that the company intends to market a wide range of materials through this brand, but they are starting with a PLA product, “Ultra PLA Filament”.

The initial batch of Ultra PLA will be available in ten interesting colors:

  • Almond Purple
  • Black
  • Grey
  • Greenery
  • Light Green
  • Ocean Blue
  • Pineapple Yellow
  • Rosehip
  • Strawberry Milk
  • White

But it’s not just about colors. Soleyin Ultra PLA has some powerful properties:

  • Made from renewable resources, including “corn and potatoes” [This is the first time I’ve ever heard of potatoes being made into 3D printer filament]
  • High-speed 3D printing capability, said to be “up to 300mm/s”
  • “High-purity and impurity-free raw materials”, suggesting consistent chemistry of the material
  • Precision filament with highly consistent diameter and roundness with tolerance of an amazing 0.02mm.
  • High Adhesion, suggesting Creality has some additives that assist in sticking to the build plate
  • “Neat Winding” to avoid tangles
  • Vacuum packaged with desiccant
  • Compatible with all Creality equipment and third-party 1.75mm FFF 3D printers

That all sounds very good, and would put Soleyin on par with the better filament products currently on the market. However, there’s one other surprise.

The price.

According to the Amazon listing, 1kg spools of Ultra PLA are priced at only US$16.99. That’s quite a good price and lower than many of the other premium filament brands.

There’s more: there is a special discounted price for Amazon Prime members: US$12.99. That price point is normally where you’d find bargain-basement, low-quality materials. It’s likely Creality’s massive size enables them to achieve these incredibly low prices, as they expect many Creality 3D printer operators will adopt Soleyin filament.

It just might be that Creality is resetting the standard price for 1kg of 3D printer filament with this move. It will be interesting to see how the competition reacts to Soleyin.
