Sculpting is one of the several approaches to developing 3D models. Others include solid modeling, or programmatic methods. Each is appropriate for developing specific types of 3D models.
Sculpting is the method most appropriate for developing organic-shaped 3D models, such as figures, vegetation or similar objects. It’s not at all suitable for designing mechanical parts, as it is not a parametric approach.
Sculpting is named after the traditional manual method of building objects: sculpting. In that practice, clay or other malleable materials are pushed, pulled and creased into the desired geometry.
That’s one of the many capabilities bundled into Blender, the free open source 3D modeling tool. If you have Blender, and anyone can by a simple download, you have a 3D sculpting tool.

The book begins with an overview of Blender’s sculpting interface, which is quite important. Blender includes so much functionality that its interface can get very confusing.
Basic sculpting workflows are explored, showing the reader how to proceed through an entire sculpting project. An example project to develop a “head” sculpture is covered.
More advanced features are also explored, including the concept of meshes, which typically must be reduced in order to have efficient 3D print job preparation by slicing software.
