One of the hidden secrets in desktop 3D printing is the use of rainbow filaments.
The most popular colors in FFF 3D printing are surprisingly black and white, which seems pretty strange considering the vast number of different colors now available on the market. While there are many colors to choose from, I suggest you try a rainbow filament.
Rainbow filaments are just that: a mixture of colors that slowly change as the filament is extruded. When printing objects, they take on a subtle shift in color, which can be extremely attractive on certain designs.
Rainbow filaments are not just a pair of colors, one, after the other. The two colors are complementary, so that objects printed with them will be aesthetically pleasing. More advanced rainbow filaments have multiple colors in sequence.
One of the producers of rainbow filaments is Chitu Systems, who are famous for their popular control systems for MSLA 3D printers and associated ChituBox slicing software. But did you know they also produce 3D print materials?
Along with their 3D printer resin offerings, they also have a line of PLA materials they call “Conjure”, many of which are rainbow-style. These are all 1.75mm diameter products, with a variance of only 0.2mm. Chitu Systems said they are easy to print and can be easily post-processed.
The two products of most interest from Chitu Systems are their Conjure Silk Rainbow PLA and Matte Rainbow PLA. The silk filament provides a visible shine, while the matte version can show more fine details.
Chitu Systems explained to us that the matte finish can provide a more subdued, non-reflective surface that is ideal for a more professional look. Meanwhile, the silk filaments are quite vibrant and colorful, most suitable for prints that attract immediate attention.
Rainbow filaments are best used for objects with visual appeal, and Chitu Systems has selected several different color combinations for buyers with these rainbow filaments.
The Conjure Silk and Matte Rainbow PLA filaments both are made with four different colors. However, the color changes so gradually that you’ll have to print an object weighing around 200g to see all four. On smaller objects, you’ll likely see a two-color switch, which can be quite desirable, as you can see in these images.
The Conjure Silk PLA filament is available in multiple color configurations, including:
- Red, Blue, Gold
- Blue, Red, Yellow
- Red, Blue, Green
- Black, Purple, Blue
- Blue, Green
- Blue, Red
- Gold, Black
- Purple, Black
- Red, Black
The idea is to visualize the appearance of your print with each of these colors to understand which would be the best choice. Chitu Systems offers more than enough color combinations to supply an appropriate selection.
If you can’t choose, then Chitu Systems offers Conjure Magic and Chameleon PLA filaments. These differ from rainbow filaments in that they actually change color depending on the angle of light striking the surface. As you rotate the print, it magically changes color!
While Conjure Chameleon comes in a standard 1kg spool, Conjure Magic is a set of four different color combinations on 200g spools. This makes it easy to create multiple unique visual appearances on your prints.
All of these filament products are available now from Chitu Systems at a cost just under US$20 each at these links:
