The ingenious chemists at colorFabb have developed yet another metal-infused 3D printing filament: brassFill.
As you might imagine, it’s made of a mixture of a standard polymer (PLA) with fine brass particles. brassFill prints can be polished using conventional techniques to develop a bright, shiny finish as you can see in the image at top.
Colorful have not yet specified a price for the material, but we imagine it will line up with their other premium metal filaments. Currently they price copperFill and bronzeFill at €50 (USD$61) for a 750g spool.
We expect brassFill to be an experiment, as colorFabb have done in the past for other unusual filaments. They’ll issue small quantities to users for testing and then adjust the product if necessary based on feedback. Ultimately we expect brassFill to be a standard product on their shelf.
A couple of cautions, however: metal filament weighs much more per unit of volume than standard plastic filaments. Thus, your slicing software may incorrectly report the amount of filament required for your model. The best way to approach this is to use a measure of filament volume, not filament weight.
A second issue is wear and tear on your extruder. The metal particles can abrade the innards of your hot end and gradually wear it out.
That said, brassFill will no doubt be an amazing 3D printing material. colorFabb will accept pre-orders for the product in January.
