This week’s selection is the Vincent Van Gogh portrait by Luke Taylor of Polymaker.

Taylor is the Creative Director for Polymaker, and we often interact with him at trade shows. Taylor attempts to present unique applications for Polymaker materials, one of which attracted our eyes this week: a multicolor representation of Vincent Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, originally painted in 1889.

Taylor explained to us the process used to create this unique 3D print. He began with a 2D image of the famous Van Gogh painting. This was run through HueForge, a standalone utility 3D tool that can prepare 3D models for layered color printing, as well as creating lithophanes.

The object was 3D printed on a Bambu Lab multicolor FFF 3D printer equipped with three AMS units, using these filaments from Polymaker’s new Panchroma line:

  • Panchroma PLA Matte Charcoal black
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Army Purple
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Muted Purple
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Pastel Ice
  • PolyLite PLA Jungle Green
  • PolyLite PLA White
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Army Brown
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Army Red
  • PolyLite PLA Orange
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Savannah Yellow

The print involved depositing layers of each color, gradually building up to portray the image as painted by Taylor in HueForge.

Note that the painting is larger than the build size on typical 3D printers. Taylor explained to us that he printed the painting in sections, which were later joined together and pasted alongside the frame, which, by the way, was also 3D printed.

This was quite a noticeable project, and you can see in the image at top a sliver of the Mona Lisa on the left and an Andy Warhol painting, both prepared in a similar manner. Incredibly, the Warhol used all these materials:

  • PolyLite PLA Wine Red
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Pastel Candy
  • PolyLite PLA Polymaker Teal
  • PolyLite PLA Jungle Green
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Sunrise Orange
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Savannah Yellow
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Lavender Purple
  • PolyLite PLA Magenta
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Rose
  • PolySonic PLA White
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Forest Green
  • PolyLite PLA Pro Yellow
  • PolyLite PLA Azure Blue
  • PolyLite PLA Pro White
  • PolyLite PLA Orange
  • PolyLite PLA Silk Lime Green
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Army Beige
  • PolyLite PLA Stone Blue
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Fossil Grey
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Pastel Mint
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Sakura Pink
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Pastel Ice
  • PolyLite PLA Pro Light Red
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Charcoal Black
  • Panchroma PLA Matte Rose

Were there any issues? Taylor said:

“I went to the warehouse to pick up twelve spools for the print, but after it was done I had used only about 20 grams on each.”
