VoxelMatters is about to release a new research report on composite material use in additive manufacturing.
Composite material usage is clearly on the rise in additive manufacturing. It’s an approach that allows common materials to be combined with additives that produce “supermaterials” that offer engineering properties beyond the standard materials.
The most common composite materials used today are mixes of polymers, such as PLA, PA and PETG, with tiny segments of glass or carbon fiber. These can very significantly increase the strength of the resulting 3D prints.
While composite material 3D printing sometimes requires modifications or specially designed devices, that’s also becoming more common. Today, even many inexpensive desktop 3D printers are fully capable of using composite materials.
The new report is quite comprehensive and covers the suppliers of hardware, materials and associated services. In all, they provide data for 150 manufacturers, 150 material producers, and 400 service organizations, all involved in composite polymers for 3D printing. Filament, pellets and powder markets are covered.
Some of the companies covered include:
- 3D Systems
- 3DXTECH
- 9T Labs
- Airtech
- ALM
- Anisoprint
- APS
- Arkema
- Arris Composites
- BASF

VoxelMatters believes this could be the largest research report currently for sale on the market, and I don’t doubt it, based on an inspection of the table of contents.
The report includes dozens of polymer composite materials, some of which I’ve never heard of. In addition, the report looks at all the companies making, using and providing these materials to industry, including a ten year forecast for their growth.
The report is targeted at companies seeking a deeper understanding of the business of composite materials in 3D printing. Knowing where the market is heading is critically important, as companies can adapt their strategy to gain the most benefit by knowing the road ahead.
