I’m checking out the CUBICON Single Plus desktop 3D printer from Korea-based HyVISION.
The CUBICON Single was (and is) a highly regarded desktop 3D printer, containing a great number of useful features and reliability as well. I first saw the “Single” over a year ago, but now I notice they’ve introduced a “Plus” version.
The Plus carries many of the same advantages as its non-Plus ancestor: enclosed 3D printing chamber for circulating heat capture and reliability, 240 x 190 x 200mm build volume, powerful air filter to remove pollutants and nanoparticles and the ability to 3D print a number of different generic materials.
But what’s different in the Plus? The major item appears to be an automated calibration process that levels the print surface. As most 3D printer operators know, leveling the print surface is often a tedious affair that no one really wants to do. Automating it is the way to go, and HyVISION has now included it.
The motion system positioning has also doubled in resolution, from 0.0125mm to 0.00625mm on the X-Y axis and from 0.0025mm to 0.00125mm on the Z-axis. No, this doesn’t mean you can print layers that small – the machine still posts 0.10mm as the smallest layer possible. Instead these statistics indicate the machine will be able to position more accurately, meaning the quality of the output will be better.
The Plus is also capable of 3D printing flexible filaments as well as PLA and ABS from generic spools. There is an open side slot to mount spools, but if you have filament on a different sized spool that’s apparently no problem – just feed it in externally.
Also new is the ability to quick-swap the extruder, a feature becoming increasingly common on desktop units these days.
The control screen has been improved and is now a color touch screen without the giant knob for navigation.
While the Plus does not yet include WiFi, it appears they’re planning on adding that capability soon.
They state the maximum speed as 500mm/second, but that’s certainly not how fast you can print. It’s how fast the motion system can move.
Pricing for the Plus appears to be in the USD$3,000 range and can be ordered in Metallic Dark Grey or Milky White case color.
