3D Systems may be taking a battering by the investment community recently, but that’s not stopping their technology: they’ve announced a major new series of 3D printing gear.
The ProJet MJP 3600 series takes over from the previous 3500 series, which included a variety of machines designed for different applications.
The new machine(s) offer several key advantages:
They print “up to” twice as fast as the 3500’s. While their performance might not be always twice as fast, you can be sure that any speed increase would be most welcome by operators of this machine, as they would certainly get additional throughput.
The 3600 series has a more powerful computing engine that is able to handle 3D model files 2.5X larger than before. This means this machine can print more complex objects, and the 3500 series could already print very complex items.
The finishing methods have been improved so that cleaning off support material is much faster. Here we can see a part in the process of being cleaned. Watch this video to see a time lapse of the support removal process:
One thing that bears mentioning: the exterior styling of the ProJet 3600 is, as you can see at top, pretty much identical to the 3500 series. Or almost every other 3D Systems device. Standardized look and feel is a good thing, unless the machines are visually indistinguishable!
Companies such as 3D Systems should always be improving their technology and that’s the case here. The new 3600 series is definitely more capable and provides some evolutionary advances that we feel would be very welcome by anyone with intentions of making production-sized quantities of highly-detailed parts.
