Did you know Microsoft produces a 3D modeling app? They’ve just updated it, too.
Microsoft’s 3D Builder app has been around since 2013, but has not received many updates – until just recently.
This is a 3D modeling tool designed for beginners, of which the large majority of Windows users will certainly be. Here’s the description from the Windows Store:
View, capture, personalize, and print 3D models using 3D Builder. Download many kinds of 3D files and edit them using the 3D modeling space. Take a picture with your webcam and make it 3D. Personalize 3D files by embossing your name, or combine models and pieces to make something new. Don’t have a 3D printer? That’s okay, you can order a professional-quality print of your model from inside the app and it’ll be sent to you by the 3D Systems Cubify service.
Sounds OK for a basic 3D modeling program, although we’re a bit suspicious of the Cubify link, as Cubify no longer exists. It’s likely such 3D print requests would be routed to other 3D Systems print services behind the scenes, however.
What’s new? The software has been updated for Windows 10, but has also added the ability to receive 3D scan data, meaning you should be able to 3D model people and other scanned items.
It seems that Microsoft is following the same market being addressed by Autodesk in their 123D App project, with 3D Builder being very similar in capability to 123D Design.
Both provide basic 3D modeling capability – and are free of charge.
