This week’s selection is the incredible Motorized Star Wars AT-AT by YouMagine contributor Dan Olson (aka “LtDan”).
Olson, a mechanical engineering student at the University of Michigan, says he likes “designing things in SolidWorks” and we believe this work is definitely cool, particularly during this week’s Star Wars launch.
As you might imagine, this item is not entirely 3D printed – but it’s pretty close. You’ll need to obtain the electrical items separately, including the motor, battery, battery clip, wires and switch. Olson estimates the cost of these at less than USD$20.
But what about the 3D printed parts? Well, it turns out there are lots in this model: 69 individual parts in all. However, Olson has somewhat simplified the job by arranging them on “only” 28 STL files for printing. While some parts, such as the exterior chassis, are large (and you should check to see that they fit within your build volume), most are small mechanical bits. He says the entire set can be printed in only four days.
Does it actually work? It does indeed; you can see it work in this video, which also includes a sequence showing how the internals operate.
The entire kit is provided for free download from YouMagine under the Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial Share Alike license, which basically means you can share it freely, so long as it’s not for commercial purposes and maintain the creator’s attribution.
Yes, this project will be a lot of work, but as they say, “no pain, no gain!”
