It’s true. You can now order filament made from coconuts. And a lot more, too.
FormFutura, well-known distributors of a wide variety of 3D printer plastic filaments, announced two new products. One of them seems, well, crazy. It’s a filament made from coconut particles and a binding polymer that behaves just like normal PLA plastic when printing. You don’t even require a heated print surface to use this stuff.
However, the result looks, acts and even smells like a hardwood. A coconut hardwood. You can get half a kilo of this beautiful deep brown material for USD$42. It’s a bit pricey, but what do you expect for such an exotic material?
If that’s not enough for you, FormFutura also announced a second unusual family of products: POROLAY. There are four members of the POROLAY family so far:
- LAY-FELT – a porous substance capable of soaking up fluids, like felt.
- LAY-TEKKKS – “thinner and more fibrous” than LAY-FELT.
- LAY-FOMM – a foamy material.
- GEL-LAY – a jelly-like material.
The prints with these materials are soaked in water to unleash their final properties. Best check out the video above to see how this works. However, they are even more expensive at USD$37 per 250g (that’s USD$148 per kilo, ouch!)
Exotic filaments, exotic pricing. But that’s what you’ll need to pay to be able to print with these unusual filaments. Let’s get squishy!
