Many new personal 3D printers have emerged from Asia, and the CoLiDo is one of them.
Marketed by Union Technology International of Macau and sourced from China, their Print-Rite division now offers the CoLiDo Desktop 3D Printer. It’s an extrusion-based 3D printer, like many inexpensive 3D printers. The key specs:
- Build Volume: 225 x 145 x 150 mm
- Resolution: 100 microns (0.1mm)
- Filament / Nozzle Diameter: 1.75mm / 0.4mm
- Chassis: Black wood, Acrylic
- Build Platform: Aluminum or coated glass
The company’s 30-year history is in providing equipment and supplies for 2D paper printing and like some such companies, they’ve decided to extend their reach into the 3D printing world.
We have to point out that the CoLiDo appears to be a clone of a MakerBot Replicator 2, a very popular and mostly reliable personal 3D printer. The company says it owns 10 patents, presumably for various internal improvements. Will that ensure the machine is equally as good? It depends primarily on the quality of the internal components, although design elements may infer similar performance.
The company also markets a line of certified toxin-free plastic filaments for the device. We suspect it’s a way for them to generate more revenue by creating a small ecosystem: sell printers to sell filaments to sell printers, and so on.
Is the CoLiDo for you? We’re not certain, but there are increased risks when acquiring equipment from a new, unknown vendor. On the other hand, pricing is often significantly reduced.
