Autodesk’s 123D initiative’s subproject, Project Shapeshifter, recently received a very exciting upgrade.
Project Shapeshifter is intended to eventually be part of the 123D app family, a set of straightforward free web and computer based 3D tools you can use to create 3D models for 3D printing. Shapeshifter is a way to dynamically generate 3D printable shapes by fiddling with numerical parameters. As you tweak the parameters, the visual representation of the resulting model changes instantly.
The upgrade involves the addition of a “Ring” model in addition to the previous “Cylinder” that is used to make cups and bowls. The Ring model is massively flexible and permits the generation of a startling array of amazing shapes. We can’t really describe it properly; you’ll just have to get online and play with the parameters to see how powerful this feature has become. Or just watch the video above to get a sense of the incredible power this tool delivers.
If you’ve ever wanted to create an amazing bracelet, this is the way to do it.
