We’re looking at another Kickstarter campaign for yet another 3D printer. There have been so many recently it has become very difficult to distinguish one offering from another.

So how does Robox do it?

We were surprised to find it does have several very unique and interesting features. Aside from the now-industry-standard features of a robust metal frame and ease of use, the Robox employs a couple of innovations we hadn’t seen before.

The most interesting feature is that it has two extruders. But wait, you say, many printers have more than one extruder. Yes, that’s true – but the Robox uses them in a very different way. One print head is a standard 0.3mm diameter, while the other is a gigantic 0.8mm diameter. Their software enables switching heads during printing to use the larger diameter head for bulk infill, while the smaller diameter head is used for fine and surface details.

The result: they claim up to a 300% increase in print speed. Why hasn’t anyone done this before?

The print head can be quickly exchanged for a cutter, a scanner or a milling head, making your machine much more versatile. The bed can also be replaced to match the type of tool in use.

The Robox boasts a 0.02mm best resolution. With other printers this resolution might take a very long time to print, but perhaps with the dual head approach such resolutions might become practical to print.

For a price of only USD$1399, it could be a pretty good deal. Check it out!
