This week’s selection is Matthew Plummer-Fernandez’ Yellow Vessel. We spotted this wonderful vase at the 3DEA exhibit in New York and it was sufficiently interesting that we looked it up to find out more about the artist behind the work.
Plummer-Fernandez uses his own software interface developed with several open source software systems for generative modeling. In other words, the shape and coloring are produced mathematically.
Yet it’s still beautiful. We particularly like the way light falls on the fractured edges to form a highly defined yet irregular shape. The color is not painted on but is digitally printed on a ZCorp color 3D printer.
This vase is but one of several objects in his Digital Natives collection. Plummer-Fernandez says:
Everyday items such as toys and a watering can are 3D scanned using a digital camera and subjected to algorithms that distort, abstract and taint them into new primordial vessel forms. In some cases only close inspection reveals traces inherited from their physical predecessors.
