3D Worms Infect The Net!

Do you use AutoCAD? If so you might be a victim of one of the most unusual cases of 3D theft we’ve seen yet.

It seems that certain AutoCAD templates have been infected with malware that does something blatantly nefarious: it sends your AutoCAD drawings to email addresses in China! What a highly efficient way to steal intellectual property!

The worm, called ACAD/Medre.A, infects your AutoCAD environment. It has only two functions: propagating itself and stealing your AutoCAD files.

One can imagine how damaging something like this could be to designers making a living on a 3D print service such as Shapeways, Ponoko or i.Materialise. Their designs could be captured and replicated at lower costs on pop-up sites elsewhere.

This probably isn’t the last time we’ll see something like this.
