Flexible and Functional: 3D Printed Kinetic Shapes

New research from Virginia Tech could lead to 3D printed fabrics, and much more. 

Negar Kalantar and Alireza Borhani of [trans] Lab have been working with Virginia Techā€™s DREAMS Lab to develop what they call the ā€œFlexible Textile Structureā€. Weā€™ve seen and touched it, and it is indeed flexible, yet made of small rigid parts. They say: 

Flexible textile structures can be developed to use and convert three-dimensional data into skin-conforming fabric structures. The potential for flexible textile structures tailored to the specific individual will be as accessible as the patterns that can be created, from interlocking Mobius motifs to tightly woven meshes.
